It's finally happened. After dabbling in the furry fandom for over ten years, I'm finally taking the plunge and making my own fursuit.

I'm not sure why this final leap took me so long. I'd been intrigued by fursuits right from the get-go, and had been considering making a fursuit for the last couple of years, but every time I thought about it I dismissed the idea. I think that I was worried that it was too weird, that I would have crossed some sort of strangeness threshold and be officially "out there". But when I saw pictures taken at a furmeet that a distant friend had attended, I realised three things; that I really wanted this, that some people would always find this hobby weird, and that both of those were okay.

So I decided to take the plunge. Despite having no experience making suits or models of any kind, despite not even knowing how to stitch on a button, I want to make my own fursuit in time to attend FurCon in January 2016.

I plan to make my suit in seven sections. Firstly I'll make the handpaws, then the footpaws, then the tail, then the head. At this point I will have a "partial" suit and put clothes over the legs, arms and torso. If I can only complete these by FurCon then at least I will still have a fursuit to wear! But I would love to also complete the arm sleeves and leg sleeves to have a more extensive partial, then finally the torso to have a complete suit. I want the suit to be built in these sections for the versatility; I could wear the full suit, or I could choose to wear long sleeved trousers and a short sleeved top, or a long sleeved top and short sleeved trousers, or both short, both long... you get the idea.

With versatility in mind, I decided I wanted the suit head to have multiple hair options. I'm still unsure of the engineering needed to pull this off, but my aim is to have some sort of simple attachment point on the head for a wig, so that three or four different costume wigs could be easily interchanged. In this way I could express different sides of my personality directed through my fursona.

I'm viewing this partly as an artistic expression, partly as a role-playing exercise, partly as a fun but challenging project, and partly as a test of my perseverance.

Wish me luck!
